IHSAA Student-Athletes Make History in Inaugural Unified Track® and Field State Finals
Ten track and field teams celebrated the historic first annual Unified Track® and Field State Finals Saturday afternoon at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.

Warsaw accumulated 101 points to take the team title, followed by Mt. Vernon (91), and Noblesville (89) and Boonville (89). A total of 147 student-athletes from across the state competed in the event. The athletes competed in five events: long jump, shot put, 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, and 400 meter relay.

The top five teams from last weekend’s two sectionals advanced to the state finals making up the 10 teams. Noblesville and West Lafayette captured last week’s sectional championships.

Unified Sports® enables persons with and without intellectual disabilities to participate on the same team for sports training and competition. The “Champions Together” partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana was launched in 2012.

This spring, schools individually scheduled regular season competitions that culminated with the IHSAA-recognized sectional and state championship.  While the IHSAA provided the framework for the competition, including rules and officials, Special Olympics Indiana provided technical support to schools participating in Unified Track and Field, as well as financial grants to a number of schools to assist with startup costs.
