IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-6-21)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Student-athletes of all ages go through tough and trying times during the school year.  Challenges in the classroom and on the field of play change daily.  Sometimes it is easy to cope, and other times it becomes difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Have you ever felt alone and unsure of how to approach the issue?  Have you felt that no one could possibly understand what you are going through?

Regardless of the challenge or issue, don't be afraid to reach out to a trusted adult and talk through the situation.

Talking through any difficulty will lift the weight off of your shoulders so you will not feel alone.   An adult who knows you and understands the situation most likely will offer a different perspective and can offer solid advice and direction.

It is true that wisdom comes with age and although you may think no one can understand your problem, you might find that others have experienced exactly the same thing!

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Last week, Georgia won college football's national title game in Indianapolis.  Georgia quarterback, Stetson Bennett, was named offensive MVP of the game.

It is not unusual for the quarterback to win such a prestigious honor, but what is unusual was Bennett's road to victory.

He walked on at his dream college, Georgia, and during his freshman season he saw no playing time.  Despite being a successful high school athlete, many thought he was too short to play quarterback.

He transferred to Jones County Junior College for his sophomore year to work on his game. He then signed with Georgia again and served as a backup for the next three seasons.

This past year, Bennett earned the starting position after an injury sidelined starter JT Daniels.  Bennett was ready when the opportunity came!  He led the Bulldogs to the title game after an exceptional season.

There will always be naysayers and challenges to reaching your dreams.  Bennett proved so many people wrong.  After the title game he said about his victory, "I hope it gives someone a little hope.  Keep your mouth shut, work hard.  Life is tough. Work through it."
