(The following appeared in that year’s HOF induction program)

As a member of the girls track and field team at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 1984 to 1987, Maicel Malone was one of the most decorated athletes in Indiana high school track and field history and was, perhaps, the first superstar in any Indiana girls sport.

Malone was an 11-time state champion in the 12 sprint events during her four years of competing in the state track and field meet. She won the 100 and 400 meters all four years and the 200 meters three years (finished second as a sophomore). She is still the Indiana state record holder in the 200 (23.1 2 in 1986) and the 400 (52.42 in 1986), and her 100-meter state record (11.52 in 1986) stood until 2015. Malone also claimed 12 IHSAA sectional titles and 12 IHSAA regional titles.

The most dominating of her high school performances came in her junior season in 1986 at the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state finals. She became the only Indiana female athlete to set three state records (100, 200, 400) in the same meet while winning all three events. Her time of 52.42 in the 400 was just .03 seconds off the national record. In three trials and three finals, not once was a competitor within 8 meters of Malone.

Now Maicel Green, she helped North Central to two state championships - as a freshman in 1984 and in her senior season in 1987. During her senior season, in addition to winning the three sprint events and helping the team to the IHSAA state title, Malone won the prestigious IHSAA Mental Attitude Award for Girls Track and Field.

Malone received a track and field scholarship to attend Arizona State University and continued her superb performances at the next level. She was a four-time NCAA champion in the 400 meters (three indoor, one outdoor) and a member of two NCAA championship relay teams (4x400 in 1991 and 4x100 in 1988).

In 1991, during a meet in her hometown of Indianapolis, Malone set an American indoor record of 51.05 in the 400-meter dash. Her best year though was 1994 when she ran a personal-best 50.05 in the 400 meters and was the top-ranked American and third in the world by Track & Field News.

She was a member of the 400-meter relay team that won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She won five other gold medals in international competition, including the 1986 World Junior Championships, the 1993 World Championships, the 1992 Universiade Games and the 1994 Goodwill Games.

Among her honors, Malone was inducted into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1993, and she was a four-time all-state selection by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

After her competitive career concluded, Malone chose to lead young people as she coached track and field as an assistant coach at Florida State University (1999-2005) and as head coach at Florida A&M University (2005-09).

Malone was born June 12, 1969, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She now resides in Havana, Florida.
