FOOTBALL SEMI-STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES THIS WEEKEND
Ten semi-state championship games will be played this weekend with winners advancing to their respective state championship game in the 39th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament presented by the Indianapolis Colts.

Nine of the games are scheduled for Friday night while the Class 2A game involving Guerin Catholic (10-3) at Evansville Mater Dei (12-1) is the lone contest set for Saturday afternoon at the Reitz Bowl.

Five undefeated teams remain in this weekend’s field and four defending state champions are still alive attempting to get back for an encore appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Class A top-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic (13-0) will put its 43-game winning streak on the line against visiting No. 6 Sheridan (10-3) this weekend. It’s the third-longest winning streak in state history behind Bloomington’s 60 consecutive wins (1967-73) and Sheridan’s 44 in a row (2005-08). Central Catholic’s last loss? To Sheridan in the sectional semifinals on Oct. 31, 2008.

Other unbeaten teams in action this week include Fort Wayne Snider (9-4) at No. 3 Penn (13-0) in Class 5A; South Bend Washington (10-3) at No. 4 Leo (13-0); fourth-ranked Bremen (13-0) at No. 1 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (11-1) and; No. 3 Linton-Stockton (13-0) at No. 7 Indianapolis Scecina (10-3).

Central Catholic and Bishop Luers are both two-time defending state champions and join Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, South Bend St. Joseph’s and Indianapolis Cathedral as teams looking to get back to the site of last year’s championships.

Class 3A No. 1 Bishop Chatard (11-2) travels to Corydon Central (11-2); St. Joseph’s (11-2), ranked fourth in Class 3A, hosts No. 3 West Lafayette (12-1) and; 4A No. 1 Cathedral (10-3) will entertain No. 3 Columbus East (12-1).

Both 5A semi-states are rematches of games played earlier this season. Penn defeated visiting Fort Wayne Snider, 31-13 on Sept. 9 while No. 2 Carmel (12-1) topped visiting Center Grove (9-4), 42-17, on Sept. 2.

South Bend Washington and Corydon Central both carried off their first regional trophies last weekend and are now among six teams gunning for their first semi-state championship along with Columbus East, Leo, Guerin Catholic and Linton-Stockton.

Scecina hopes to end its semi-state drought which has reached 20 years. The Crusaders won back-to-back Class 2A state titles in 1990 and 1991.

Visit www.ihsaa.org this weekend as scores from each game become available as well as information for next weekend’s five state championship games at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Lafayette Jeff girls golf coach John Hatter has been selected as the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association's girls golf coach of the year. During Hatter's five seasons with the Bronchos, the teams have won five sectional titles and four city/county titles. The Bronchos advanced to the IHSAA state finals this fall for the fourth season in a row.
