IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (1/15/24)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs holds the NFL record for most consecutive years with 1,000 or more receiving yards for a tight end, so it was big news when the streak came to an end during their last regular season game.

He chose to sit the game out along with several of his teammates, getting rested and healed.  He needed only 16 yards to extend his record--but said it did not feel right playing for the record for himself.  (Kelce had a 1,000 yard or more season from 2016-2022).

Kelce stated, "I've always had it in my mind if I lose the Super Bowl, that's a failure.  I've always had it in the back of my mind that that's how I work and it just doesn't feel right to go out there for 16 yards."

In an era when many athletes focus on records and individual play, it is refreshing to see a star player talk about the importance of team over self!

When your coach talks about team first, remember Kelce's sacrifice. If your team winning is your ultimate goal, then think about what decisions you might make for the team first, over personal gain!
