IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (1/23/23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

In team sports, one of the biggest challenges facing coaches and players, is how to keep everyone involved, engaged and pulling in the same direction.

In your opinion, what makes a good teammate?  I believe the most important (and likely the most challenging) trait is being happy for someone else's success.  It doesn't matter if you play the same position or even the same sport-- the other student-athlete may be getting more playing time, more recognition or opportunities.

Please understand that the "success" of others around you has no impact on your accomplishments.  Your time will come when you have earned it.  Learning to share in another's achievements will make you feel better and likely drive you to work harder.  I am not saying it is always easy-I am saying it is something to work on to challenge you to become a better person and teammate.

Next time you feel jealous or envious of another's reward, stop and congratulate them.  Share in their joy and happiness and they will more likely do the same with your successes!
