IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (10/6/25)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

While every athlete sets out to play the perfect game, it never happens.  Sports are not a game of perfection.  In fact, it is quite the opposite.  In most cases, the team or athlete who makes the fewest mistakes usually wins.

Last week, the Indianapolis Colts lost to the Los Angeles Rams in a game where a wide receiver made two critical mistakes.  The player took accountability for dropping the ball before he crossed the goal line and for a block in the back on another touchdown run that was called back.

The Colts teammates stood up for the player, as any good teammate would. They made statements like everyone makes mistakes, let's grow from this, let's not point fingers, and keep trying our hardest rang out throughout the after-game discussions.

Coaches can be very frustrated when mistakes happen, especially those you have control over like mental mistakes.  My advice is to prepare every day in practice like it is a game.  Work on the fundamentals that give you an advantage over your teammates and opponents.

When you step on the field/court, concentrate on the things you can control.  By doing so you will cut down on your mistakes and give your team the best chance to win!
