IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12/15/25)
"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"
The 2025 Heisman winner is Fernando Mendoza of Indiana University, the first ever for the Fighting Hoosiers. He was victorious in a runaway vote over Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback, running back Jeremiyah Love of Notre Dame and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin.
Mendoza gave all the credit for the award to his teammates, coaches and family. But to be honest, Mendoza, the redshirt junior from Miami (Florida), did more for his team than any other player in the country, and the Hoosiers are ranked #1 as a result.
Mendoza stands out as a result of his football IQ and the endless hours he has devoted to being a student of the game. He spends extra hours in the film room, practices early and stays late, and spends extra time passing with his wide receivers and tight ends.
Extra work does not guarantee success. But if you are not willing as a student-athlete to put in the extra time and work, you will never reach your full potential.
Mendoza had no Division I offers out of high school, attended camp after camp to gain exposure, but kept believing in himself and his ability. He found his way to IU because his younger brother was there and convinced him that the IU staff would help him reach his full potential.
Mendoza has likely achieved and exceeded his football goals and he is not finished. He thanked his teammates for all their help--he realizes that no one person can be successful alone!
