IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12/18/23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Do you ever wake up not feeling well and wonder how you are going to perform during the day?  Maybe you don't think you can sit through class or wonder if you can go in practice?  Let's face it, it happens to all of us at some point.

So how can you push through and make those days work for you?  If you are too sick for school, or fighting an injury that sidelines you-then rest is what you need.

I am talking about the other days when you are not at your best.  Start with assessing the last few days.  Have you had your rest/sleep?  Are you taking care of that minor injury-icing or treating as your trainer or doctor suggested?

Your mental toughness will be challenged on these days as a student-athlete.  Can you focus on the task at hand whether it is the classroom, a practice or a match?  Can you adjust to do your best on these days despite the nagging feeling?

No one is 100% healthy every day of the year or sports season.  If you take charge of the things that you do control --like sleep, study habits, rest, icing, eating habits--it will help you during the tough times.  Give your best every day and you will find that your mental toughness and drive (along with doing the right things) will help get you through the highs and lows and any other challenges you might face!
