IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2/15/23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Recently, a high school coach shared with me an experience with one of his student-athletes that is heart-warming and is a story worth telling.

As final cuts were coming down to a close, he called his senior player into his office and told him he was not going to make the team.  The player told his coach that he didn't care if he ever played a minute, and he felt he would be the kind of practice player who could make his teammates better.  He just wanted to be on the team.  The coach changed his mind and kept him on the roster.

According to this coach, he has been an inspiration to his team.  While he has only appeared briefly in a few games, he works hard in practice and is a great example for others while on the bench.

It is a unique and special athlete who is willing to put in the time and effort that goes into a team sport, without the reward of playing time. Have you ever been associated with a player with this drive and attitude?  If so, I am sure that it is something you will remember forever.  I have no doubt that this special individual will succeed in his future endeavors as he certainly has the work ethic and attitude to be successful in life. His playing time lies ahead!
