IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-27-23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

One of the biggest games of the college basketball season in Indiana is the IU-Purdue game.  It is one of the longest and biggest rivalry games in collegiate athletics.  While watching this past weekend, I couldn't help but reflect on rivalry games and the intensity it seems to bring each and every time.

I am sure your high school team has an archrival as well.  For those games and matches you will find more anticipation, bigger crowds and a bigger celebration for the winning team.  In reality, you play your game/match with every play being analyzed, criticized and commended by both teams and fan bases.

How do you feel before you play your rival school or opponent?  Are you more pumped?  Does it mean more than just a regular season game or match?

I played many games against rival opponents and what I can tell you is I remember them fondly.  I remember the roar of the crowds, the team camaraderie before, during and after the game, and the outcome.  The memories will last a lifetime.

IU came out on top of the rivalry game last weekend.  Despite how either team fares in the coming month, those teams, their families and fans will remember the game and outcome for a long time.  Enjoy your opportunities to compete, but soak in the atmosphere and competition when it comes to your rivals!
