IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2/6/23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

In all team sports, every play in the game counts. However, it seems like the focus (good or bad) comes down to the last few minutes of every competition.

Last week in the AFC Championship football game, Cincinnati linebacker Joseph Ossai, was penalized for unnecessary roughness for hitting Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes as he stepped out of bounds late in the game. It was a costly mistake and his team ended up losing on a last second field goal.

A distressed Ossai owned up to his mistake and stated he will learn from it.  High performing teams like the Bengals understand that no single play nor one single player can be the sole cause of a loss. Ossai's teammates immediately defended him as a hard worker and recounted mistakes that others made during the game. Safety Michael Thomas said, "Nobody in this locker room is blaming him. I hope no fans and anybody else puts blame on him."

When you have a teammate who makes a critical mistake early or late in a game, be there for them and make sure that you have their back!
