IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (3/23/26)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

This past week, Braden Smith, former Indiana Mr. Basketball (2022) from Westfield High School, became the NCAA Division I all-time career assist leader.

Smith was a solid high school player, but due to his 6' frame, was lightly recruited at the DI level.  He believed in himself and his abilities, while the doubters talked about what he could not do, based highly on his height.  The exception was Purdue coach Matt Painter, who offered Smith--and the rest is history.

A lot of Indiana high school student-athletes are overlooked for a variety of reasons.  If you have a desire to play college athletics and you are not getting the looks from colleges, don't give up.  My advice is to be realistic about your abilities and how they transfer to the collegiate level.  Your high school and club/AAU coaches might be a good resource for this.

Both of Smith's parents played college basketball at Arkansas Tech University.  They likely found a school that aligned with their high school abilities and were happy to play at the collegiate level.

Be open-minded when it comes to your desire to play at the next level.  What might be the right fit for you may not appeal to others.  Ask questions and say yes when you find that right fit!!
