IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (3/9/26)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Lou Holtz, the longtime college football coach who led Notre Dame to a national championship in 1988, passed away this past week.

After retiring from coaching, Holtz became a broadcaster and a motivational speaker, sharing his wisdom that inspired his teams for decades.  He may have been small in stature, but his words and quotes will be talked about for decades to come.

Holtz believed in self-discipline and that anything that is noteworthy cannot be achieved without it.  "Without self-discipline, success is impossible, period."

Another Holtz saying relates to student-athletes at all levels.  "You're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose."

Holtz was one of the most popular, colorful, respected men ever to coach college football.  He demanded the most out of his players and never hesitated to jump on his players if he felt they needed it.

I will share one last quote that may sum up his philosophy on the heart and fortitude of athletes.  "Winners embrace hard work, they love the discipline of it....Losers see it as punishment."
