IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (5/5/25)
"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"
There is an age old question that has faced coaches and athletes throughout the ages. Do you learn more about your team and yourself following a win, or following a loss?
I truly believe that good coaches and players will learn from each game experience-whether it was a win or a loss. Are you and your teammates learning from both?
Following a loss, the mood and atmosphere is likely a little more negative and a sense of urgency sets in. Following a win, coaches and the team tend to be more positive with an emphasis on building on the positives that led to victory.
To be truthful, no season goes by without a difficult loss that will highlight areas of needed improvement, needed changes and possibly a different attitude.
My advice is to never get too low after a loss and never too high after a win. Learn something from each game. Your goal as a student-athlete should always be to improve on your previous performance and prepare in practice like the next game is the most important game of the season!
