IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (9/9/25)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

Being a referee/official at any level is a challenging and often thankless job.  With the speed, quickness and strength of athletes today, it is very hard to see everything and impossible to make the correct call every time.

As an athlete, your attitude and demeanor can help or hinder you when it comes to dealing with the referees/officials.

There is one situation where you must be smart and keep your composure--and that is avoiding any call for retaliation.  If your reaction to a hard hit, cheap shot, or a no call is to reciprocate you will more than likely be called for a penalty/foul. The attention always gets focused on a skirmish-usually to see the retaliatory reaction and not the initial contact.

If someone hits you illegally (intentionally or not), you must keep your composure.  Don't retaliate, don't push or shove, and keep your distance.  Give the officials time to do their job!
