IHSAA STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE FEATURES BUTLER’S BRAD STEVENS
With the goal of promoting positive traditions and sportsmanship in the secondary students of our state, the Indiana High School Athletic Association will conduct its Eighth Annual Student Leadership Conference on Tuesday (June 21) at Pike High School in Indianapolis.

One of the largest conferences of its kind in the nation, a total of 803 attendees entering grades 10-12 and representing 91 different Indiana high schools are registered to participate at this year’s conference. All will have the opportunity to meet and interact with one another, hear from several speakers, both national and local in scope, and participate in three different breakout discussion sessions covering more than 30 wide-ranging topics.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Butler University men’s basketball coach Brad Stevens. In just four years, Stevens has guided Butler to 117 wins, along with its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and a second straight national runner-up finish.

Among the 32 featured speakers are the dynamic and “high octane” Harvey Alston who’s unforgettable words of individual responsibility for achievement have improved spirits, spurred growth, and changed lives.  Joining Alston is the internationally-acclaimed comedian/magician Stephen Bargatze.  Bargatze’s genuine personality endears him to any audience and his motivational message touches many on an emotional level.

Leadership, Sportsmanship, College Preparation, Community Service, Hazing and Developing a Captains’ Table are just a few of the discussion topics available to the students during the conference.

“Our continual purpose of the Student Leadership Conference is to help reinforce what is learned through interscholastic athletics and apply that to other aspects of a student-athletes life,” says IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy, who has served as the Conference Administrator since its inception. “Over the years, we’ve added experts in numerous areas of interest with the intention of assisting them with life skills and information they can take with them to impact their own schools and communities.”
