Marissa Gasaway’s 18-point, 10-rebound performance helped make Silver Creek’s first-ever appearance in the state finals a success as the Dragons posted a 54-48 victory over South Bend Washington in the Class 3A championship game.

Kynidi Striverson’s free throw with no time on the clock gave the Dragons a 15-14 lead after one quarter and coach Scott Schoen’s squad never trailed again.

The Dragons (25-3) eventually built a lead as large as 12 points (32-20) early in the third quarter. Washington did fight back and cut the lead to one point on three occasions – the last at 44-43 with 3:12 left in the game, but could never take the lead.

Instead, Gasaway scored four points in a 10-5 run to close the game. Alana Striverson added 11 points for the winners, while Kynidi Striverson scored 10.

For coach Steven Reynolds’ Panthers, Mila Reynolds matched Gasaway’s game-high 18 points, while Rashunda Jones added 13 points.
Washington (22-6) was making its fifth appearance in the state finals, but its first since 2009. The Panthers were 4A champions in 2007.

Jaclyn Emly named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Jaclyn Emly of Silver Creek High School as the winner of the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Girls Basketball.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

Emly ranks first in her senior class with a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Athletic Council. She ranks third in school history in scoring and was named Second Team All-State by Hoosier Basketball Magazine.

She is the daughter of Trina and Steve Emly of Sellersburg, IN and will study Pre-Med while playing basketball for Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, KY.

The Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Silver Creek High School in the name of Jaclyn Emly.

The award is named in honor of the late former IHSAA assistant commissioner Patricia L. Roy, who oversaw the girls basketball state tournament from its inception in 1976 until her retirement in 1999.
