Nine state records, including four during Saturday's championship heats highlighted this year's IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Carmel, once again, led the field scoring 461 points for its 36th consecutive team title, a national record in any sport or gender. Fishers was runner-up with 283, Hamilton Southeastern was third with 164, and Concord celebrated its highest finish ever with a 162 points, good for fourth. Zionsville rounded out the top five with 147 points.

The Greyhounds had three different individual state champions - two by record-setting freshmen - and swept all three relays for the fourth straight year.

Freshman Alex Shackell set a new mark in the 100 butterfly in 51.71 on Saturday while Lynsey Bowen cruised to the win in the 500 freestyle. She tied the state record of 4:45.15 on Friday night.

Teammate Berit Berglund set the new state record in the 100 backstroke in 51.50 on Friday and then matched that exact same time during Saturday's final heat to win her third consecutive crown in the event.

Berglund, Shackell, Vivian Wilson and Meghan Christman combined to swim a state record 1:38.86 on Friday in the 200 medley relay only to go even faster on Saturday winning the event in 1:38.55.

Bloomington South senior Kristina Paegle set two state records during Friday's prelims clocking 48.00 in the 100 freestyle and 1:45.02 in the 200 freestyle and knocking out a pair of marks from 2015. She won both events on Saturday including her third consecutive title in the 100.

Zionsville senior Devon Kitchel was also a double winner winning the 200 individual medley for the third straight year and the 100 breaststroke for the first time.

Penn sophomore Lilian Christianson set the new standard in the 50 free cutting through the water in a blazing 22.14 to repeat as champion.

And Mia Prusiecki of Center Grove won the diving competition with 524 points, the first Trojan to win the springboard title.

Concord's Grace Brenneman named Mental Attitude Award recipient
Grace Brenneman of Concord High School was named the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award following the meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

A team captain and four-time state finals qualifer, Brenneman ended her career today finishing third in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. She was voted her school's female athlete of the year in 2021.

Academically, Grace ranks first in her senior class of 358 students and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been a member of the Junior Livestock Advisory Board, the Elkhart County 4-H Dairy Feeder Calf Club, and was named 2021 Miss Elkhart County 4-H Fair Queen.

Grace is the daughter of Daniel and Angela of Brenneman of Elkhart. She will be attending the University of Notre Dame where she will pursue her studies in Business management and consulting. She is the fourth Concord athlete honored with an IHSAA mental attitude award and first since 1998.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented $1,000 to Concord High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Grace Brenneman.
