Sportsmanship Has a New Supporter

Letter From the Commissioner

Ivy Tech Community College

In the 2014 fall edition of The Spectator, I discussed sportsmanship and that, collectively, we are the face of sportsmanship in our state. Each of us has a duty to promote positive sporting behavior at contests and in social media. As the association continues its important emphasis on sportsmanship, we welcome a new corporate partner to assist in our efforts. Ivy Tech Community College has joined forces with the IHSAA as the presenter of the Sportsmanship campaign.

Ivy Tech serves thousands of Hoosiers in providing educational opportunities to both high school and post high school students. The values and objectives of Ivy Tech are in concert with those of the association, and we are most grateful for their gracious support.

Once again this year, the IHSAA provided a dynamic sportsmanship kit to each member school in a continuing theme that highlights education-based athletics as a valuable asset in our state. Additionally, two unique components were added to our collection of materials. For the first time, a dedicated set of posters for middle schools were provided for membership distribution, along with 500 popcorn boxes trumpeting dual messages from the association and Ivy Tech. We encourage you to attend a sporting event at your local high school and order a box of popcorn while you support your favorite team. Finally, we urge you to post your positive representations of sportsmanship on social media using the hashtag #FaceOfSportsmanship. Together, we can promote the many positive attributes of high school sports in our great state.

IHSAA Champions Network sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance

The IHSAA is proud to announce the return of Indiana Farm Bureau as a partner with the IHSAA. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is now the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Champions Network and will serve as the title sponsor of all IHSAA television, webcast, and radio network broadcasts. Additionally, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance will be the exclusive insurance partner of the IHSAA and will, once again, present the mental attitude awards in all sports (28 in total) with the exception of football, girls basketball, and boys basketball, which already have title sponsors. This partnership permits our organizations to cooperatively recognize the accomplishments of Indiana's student-athletes and reward excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community.

We invite you to follow IHSAA tournament series events on the Champions Network presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

Cordially,

#FaceOfSportsmanship

This year, we have expanded our well-known Sportsmanship campaign to the world of social media. Weekly, we will post content giving tips, wishing well to athletes in their upcoming games, and encouraging acts of school spirit and good sportsmanship. In addition, we will post pictures that demonstrate the "Face Of Sportsmanship" straight off the fields, courts, and tracks from high schools throughout Indiana. All of this, of course, will be accompanied with the hashtag #FaceOfSportsmanship.

We are excited about this new initiative and could use your help in spreading the word! Show your support for sportsmanship by retweeting our posts along with posting your own content using the hashtag #FaceOfSportsmanship. Who knows? You might see one of your student-athletes featured in one of our posts!

IHSAA Hosts Midwest Sports Officials Summit

Midwest Sports Officials Summit logo: Indiana 2015

The Midwest Officials Group has been gathering for the past 21 years. Born out of a need to specifically address issues directly related to the Keepers of the Game, this group is comprised of 21 Assistant Commissioners and Association Leaders that are tasked with the supervision of officials in their respective states. Gathering annually, this group takes time to discuss and share new ideas concerning recruiting, training, and retaining officials. 21 different states are seated at the table, but issues remain consistent from North Dakota to Ohio, from Kansas to Kentucky. Discussions this year quickly led to topics such as assigners, licensing reciprocity, and rating systems. This two-day conference produces some of the most innovative ideas within our officiating procedures. Indiana was pleased to host this year's event and looks forward to future meetings as we continue to work for our current and future IHSAA officials.
