IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (11/13/23)

"Promoting Education Based Athletics in Indiana"

If you play a team sport, you realize that you depend upon each other for success.  The more successful your team becomes, the more individual recognition you will receive.  So how can you show leadership to your teammates and influence them in a positive way?

I could list many things, but I would like to emphasize a few that you individually can focus on for any team sport.

Foremost, positive body language is required from start to finish whether you are in the game or on the bench.  If you are focused on the team, you will be encouraging your teammates and building them up.  A pat on the back after a mistake or poor play may be all you need to do to lift up your teammate.  Secondly, never bad mouth another player or coach.  Emotions can lead to frustration at times, but keep those thoughts to yourself.  Last, but not least, take responsibility for your actions including mistakes that you might have made and move on to the next play.

Remember that sports are not games of perfection.  Mistakes will always be made.  The team that responds the best usually ends up the winner!
